about

Relative Motion is an artist-produced recording by David Bindman, tenor & alto saxophones/flute, Michael Sarin, drums, and Stefan Bauer, marimba. Based in Brooklyn, NY, the trio grew out of a time-honored impulse: to explore original work together, to develop compositions whose familiarity can only be achieved by absorption. During and around 2020, when NYC came to a virtual stop, the trio recorded these tracks.

Stefan Bauer arrived in New York from Germany by way of western Canada. Michael Sarin is originally from Seattle. David Bindman, originally from New York City, lived around New England before returning. All were drawn to the city to participate in the city's rich music environment/landscape. All have recorded and toured internationally.

The music eschews simple labels; firmly unpredictable, the rug is pulled out occasionally, atonality and lyricism intersect, time occurs in complex meters or floats in suspended animation. It is music in the exploratory jazz tradition, always in flux, commenting on the world as we find it, without censorship.

Stefan Bauer’s wood-toned, five octave marimba, part of a family of instruments found in West Africa and Asia, offers myriad possibilities for contrapuntal lines and orchestral voicings. David Bindman brings multiple timbres and extended techniques on tenor/alto saxophones and flute. Michael Sarin creates grooves and sonic textures drawn from every part of the drum set. All trade roles with one or another; each take the lead voice or bass role at any one time.

The title suggests that things are only as they are according to one’s perspective. The liner notes state: “As a species moving through time, our individual and collective motion is relative. Some individuals or groups have been here, or somewhere similar, in some way before.”

about

Relative Motion Trio Brooklyn, New York

The trio performs original composed and improvised works with a non-traditional instrumentation. David Bindman (saxes/flute), Michael Sarin (drums), and Stefan Bauer (marimba) pursue polyrhythmic, pan-tonal investigations into the turns and mysteries of time. Individual voices meet in conversation, structures are sculpted and reshaped, a bull in the China shop appears... ... more
